Link Building for Search Engine Optimization
On-page changes such as code enhancement and content enhancement are actually only a small (but essential) part of successful search engine optimization. Building links from other websites is critical in getting search engines to treat your site as an authoritative source of information.
To best understand this, realize that the Google algorithm was written by students who based it in part on academia. The idea being that linking is the equivalent of citing a source. So if you write an excellent document about coffee, and I link to the document as a good source of information, clearly your document should come up higher in the search engines for the term coffee.
For an excellent example of the importance of linking, do a search in Google for the term "click here". You will find the number one result is from Adobe Acrobat, despite the fact that the term "click here" is not on this page. The reason is the volume of links from other sites that host PDF files, and tell users if they don't have Adobe Acrobat, they can "click here" to download. With that in mind the rest of the first page ranking for this term makes a lot of sense (Apple, Paypal, etc...)
